How do we sample snakes on our preserves? 🐍 ✨ One easy way we find these critters is by looking under metal roofing, which traps heat from the sun. ☀️ Derrick Cooper, Northeast Ohio Preserves Manager, explains how these sheets are used for monitoring fields like this one. 🌱 🦋 This field has been restored over the last four years through a Great Lakes Fish and Wildlife Recovery Grant. It houses and benefits snakes, butterflies, birds, dragonflies, and other species. Learn more about our conser

It's hide and seek, and let's just say the snakes are winning! 🏆 🐍 All jokes aside, metal roofing is one way we find snakes for monitoring on our preserves. Talk about core strength ... though snakes are really all core when you think about it. Gray (aka black) rat snakes (Pantherophis spiloides) are excellent climbers, scaling trees to hunt, find shelter, sun themselves, or rest while they digest a meal. As the biggest snakes in Ohio, they are non-venomous and harmless to people. Their primary diet consists of rodents and small mammals, making them a crucial part of the ecosystem by controlling rodent populations. #OhioNature #Wildlife #nature #ohi

Take a lengthy look at the longest species of snake native to North America: the Eastern indigo! 🐍 This non-venomous apex predator lives in the longleaf pine forests of the Southeast region. Not only are these snakes gorgeous, but they also play a critical role in population control for many small mammals, birds, amphibians, and some other reptiles. Much of the Eastern indigo’s longleaf pine habitat has been lost in the last century, which resulted in the listing of this species as threatened u
