DYK? Larval flounder are born with one eye on each side of their head, like you would see with most fish. But, as they grow, one eye migrates to the other side of the body! This allows the flatfish to masterfully camouflage itself on the ocean floor, for protection against predators! NPS video by Morgan Wagner shows a flounder laying on a sandy benthic habitat, where only its two rotating eyes and mouth are visible. #flounder #fish #ocean #Biscayne #BiscayneNaitonalPark | Biscayne National Park

Larval flounder are born with one eye on each side of their head, but as they grow from the larval to juvenile stage through metamorphosis, one eye migrates to the other side of the body. As a result, both eyes are then on the side which faces up. The side to which the eyes migrate is dependent on the species type. As an adult, a flounder changes its habits and camouflages itself by lying on the bottom of the ocean floor as protection against predators.[1] | Fishing World Tv

🐟 This is one flat-out cool fish! When you visit Sobela Ocean Aquarium, you might just spy the unusual four-spot flounder that resides in the same habitat as sea turtle Tortellini. Much like its name suggests, this flounder will be seen much of the time flat upon the habitat floor – the perfect position for an ambush predator. Native to the North American Atlantic coast, the four-spot flounder has a fascinating development. In the larval stages, it swims upright with eyes on both sides of their

Freaky Flounder Friday! No, you’re not seeing double. This is a rare instance of a flounder with full pigment on both the “eye” side and the “blind” side, known as “complete ambicoloration”. Typically, larval flounder start out swimming upright in the water column with an eye on each side, and then they undergo metamorphosis in the first few weeks of their life. One eye moves to the opposite side of their head, their body flattens out as they start swimming parallel to the bottom, and pigment de

A larval Mexican Flounder (Cyclopsetta chittendeni) fluttered its way into my heart on Sunday night a few miles offshore of West Palm Beach, FL, out over ~750’ of water. This is the first of this species I’ve ever seen - definitely the prettiest and rarest of the Caribbean flounder species - and after being called over by Mike @sharkbite3tx & DM Autumn (thank you!), I stayed with it until I was sucking my tank coffee stirrer style. Shot with the new @nauticamhousings NA-Z8 from @reefphotovideo .
